Varsity:
The OHS girls varsity team is not only crushing their games, but also their team spirit.
“The community is very good, it’s like a family, and we all like to joke around, and we all support each other,” said Mia Davis, sophomore.
Like every good team, basketball is not only close-knit but also committed to being the best it can be.
“Our assistant coaches are more joking, but then our coach is serious, but we also have a good time,” said Sophia Davis, sophomore.
While there is a lighthearted manner to the team, they know when to focus and do what needs to be done, working with each other to always improve.
“We know our roles and what we have to do every day. We have to practice hard,” said Ava Schooler, junior.
The team is dedicated to doing well, succeeding, and making it to the state tournament, a lot of work goes into qualifying for state.
“[Traveling is] really fun, it’s really competitive, and there’s a lot of good competition out there. We are just really lucky to get to go to state for tournaments,” Schooler said.
One of the varsity’s favorite things to do is travel, for a multitude of reasons. They enjoy the chance to forge stronger friendships and play the sport they love.
“It’s like a team bonding, and it gives people more experience. The people that don’t [normally] travel get to travel and play the sport that we love,” S. Davis said.
Even though there is a lot that varsity does and works for, their amazing sense of community always shows up.
“My favorite part [of being on the team] is probably playing all the games, home games are really fun…Just playing with my team,” Schooler said.
JV:
Similar to Varsity, junior varsity has a big emphasis on community, being part of a team.
“We all work together, we stay together, and keep our energy good,” said Demya Trask, freshman.
Everyone on the team prioritizes a friendly environment and enjoys being around each other. The team is very close and works hard to have a good community.
“The community is like a family, and we are all best friends, and those are my best friends,” said Jayden Dickinson, junior.
Basketball has always had a lot of practices, which leads to more time with the team and the space to open up to each other.
“My team is really supportive, and I feel like we could talk about anything that we go through if something happens,” said Storey Smith, sophomore.
Along with being great at communicating, junior varsity is also excelling at working hard for their goals. The girls basketball while having a lighthearted mood knows how to accomplish their goals.
“I feel like with the coach and the team, we are all kind of the same. Our coach isn’t really strict, but she knows how to keep us on task and what our goal is,” Smith said.
If there is one thing that junior varsity is, if nothing else, it is dedicated to their team and to their goal of winning.
“There’s always going to be bumps along the journey, so [we] just stay committed and continue to work hard,” Trask said.
