Scream 7, released on February 26, 2026, and directed by Kevin Williamson, is yet another addition to the long-running series of the thrilling adventures of the main character, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, and now along with her daughter, Tatum Evans, played by Isabel May.
Sidney has built a life for herself as a new Ghostface emerges again to haunt the town of Woodsburrow; she soon realizes that her daughter is the next target. As family ties intertwine, suspense builds, and the killings start to pile up, Sidney and her daughter are determined to find the killer and end the cycle for good.
One of the film’s strongest aspects is the self-awareness it exudes. Like the previous movies, it leans into more anecdotes about other horror tropes, but in this specific edition, it also leans into fan culture and closes in on how hard it is to live up to the franchise’s past.
Visually, the film has a steady pace of darkness with a hint of suspense. There is an effective use of good pacing to build a thrilling sensation with tension, but also a little light-hearted humor is incorporated. The suspense is carefully built into the usual structure of the past movies, but in this specific one, viewers have noticed that it relies not on unnecessary jump scares, but more on the atmosphere and suspense to keep the audience on their toes.
However, the movie is not without flaws. Many critics call the plot extremely predictable, especially for viewers who know the franchise and the patterns of most of the movies. Many also say that some of the scenes come off as repetitive and copy other movies in the past.
Throughout the movie, there is a big development between Sidney and her daughter Tatum, primarily through their relationship, which goes through several ups and downs. Many viewers saw their relationship as grating and straining cruelty on the idea that someone who has gone through so much also has to raise a child.
Despite most of these shortcomings, the film did a great job delivering most of the audience’s expectations from the past movies. They gave mystery and a good blend of horror and thriller, but with a niche sense of humor in between. Although it goes back to many of the other roots built from the other movies, it can be seen as heartwarming to touch on moments from the past.
Overall, Scream 7 was more well-received than negatively received, and was an entertaining movie to add to the franchise. Although Scream 8 has not gotten the green light from the studios yet, most fans are pretty satisfied to close the chapter of the series with the seventh movie. This definitely is a worthwhile movie to watch for nostalgia alone, but also for the thrilling and emotional roller coaster it provides.
