It seems to be the new trend of turning teen heart throb books into movies nowadays. Divergent was not even close to being an exception.

Divergent takes place in a dystopian world where they created the theory that the key to world peace is by separating everyone into “factions” or groups based on their personality and virtues.

The plot line follows our independent female Tris who doesn’t fit into one faction but rather all of them. This rare occurrence is called Divergent. Which just so happens to be taboo in this world and of course puts Tris in danger.

Which is kind of ironic considering the whole purpose of the factions were to have world peace but they use violence to keep that “peace”.

And so independent Tris must fight for her life against her government which is trying to kill her and her kind. Sound familiar? It seems to follow the baseline plot of Hunger Games.

Yes, there are many differences between the two plots but if you look at the structure of the world and the characters, they could be sisters.

Tris challenges every authority much like her sister Katniss. They both live in the unwanted faction or district and are trying to be killed by their government who sees them as a threat to their plans.

All these teen movies try to follow Twilight and Hunger Games thinking they can be the next big thing, but they make the mistake of also trying to mimic these movies’ plot lines. They were hardly good enough the first time.

Don’t get me wrong, the plot to Divergent was good. It definitely held my interest but it was nothing new. Nothing that made me want to buy it and keep it on my shelf to watch every weekend. It was cliche, over done, and predictable.

I feel like the only reason I didn’t completely hate it was because of the similarity to Hunger Games. It’s actually quite sad that this movie couldn’t reach its full potential. If only there were more twists and originality it could have been great but instead it turned to nothing more than lazy writing.

If there isn’t a better movie to watch then Divergent, it might be worth seeing but overall I wouldn’t be running to theaters to see it.

I expect a redemption to come out of Divergent’s coming series but the reality of that appears to be very low. But I guess you can’t do much more than wait and see.

You can take an Aptitude test on Divergent’s website to see which faction you would fit in. Take the test at: http://divergentthemovie.comaptitudetest and then comment below your result.
