Boys’ golf is a great way for students to be involved with school affairs just as much as people who are part of FBLA, FCCLA, STUGO, or other clubs. It helps students to reach a goal they might have set for themselves, or even just to try something new and have fun. However, like most other sports that OHS offers, boys’ golf differs from other extracurriculars through the primary focus on teamwork, discipline, and having fun.
The first thing that people who are interested in joining boys’ golf can look forward to is the less harsh environment compared to baseball or football when it comes to making mistakes.
“It’s different in coaching some other sports,” said Jeff Williams, boys golf team coach. “But I’ve definitely learned along the way that it’s much better to encourage them versus being disappointed.”
Another encouragement is the satisfaction of putting effort into the sport and receiving great results.
“I enjoy that feeling when you finally have a breakthrough, and have a good score, and seeing that progress and [being] able to know that I am a good player at the end of the day and I’m able to complete a goal for myself,” said Ian Sager, senior.
The best part of everything that the sport has to offer is the great bonds and connections that can be formed, not just among team members, but among friends.
“I’ve played golf for a long time; it’s always been a passion of mine, and the team is just a great spot to start and be able to play, meet, and make connections in high school,” Sager said.
The DV Cup is the main tournament that OHS boys’ golf players look forward to, and work toward the entire year. It is a competitive tournament among high school golf teams within DVUSD.
“Our DV Cup is a big deal, making state is a big deal, we want to keep that tradition going,” Williams said. “It’s gonna be tough, it’s going to be competitive. A couple of other schools in the district are playing well, they’re gonna have good teams.”
Overall, students who enjoy golf should certainly join the team, as it functions as a way for people of all different kinds to bond over one similar hobby, as well as help people to make themselves feel accomplished through their efforts.
“People should join, because it’s a lot of fun, and there’s a lot of good people,” said Charles Poortstraw, sophomore.
