Golf is a very individual sport; everyone moves at their own pace, each hitting their own golf ball, not playing with others. However, OHS girls’ golf has made golf to be more than a singular sport; they are like a sisterhood. The OHS golf team works to foster a wonderful community and a close-knit team.
“I feel like it’s a family… We are all just out there having fun and improving,” said Bailee Miller, sophomore.
The team is all connected with each other, not only working on bettering themselves, but also helping teammates improve.
“Our community is really close; we all hype each other up,” said Juliette Brown, sophomore.
It is important for the golfers to remember that they have a community of supporters in their team and a coach despite all the challenges, mentally or physically.
“It’s definitely more of a mental game, you can’t let a bad shot get you down,” Miller said.
Golf is more than just a match; it is a battle to stay focused and not let emotions win- golfers have to learn to be composed under pressure.
“At the beginning, it’s hard to do that [mentally prepare] because you don’t know what you are getting into, but the more you do it, the more you can adjust,” said Aleena Pirzada, junior.
Although golf may be very tough on a golfer’s mind, they have to worry about what is happening in the moment, not what happened in the past.
“My job out there is to really keep them steady and focus on each shot that comes and don’t worry about anything that happened in the past,” said Jim Horyza, girls golf coach.
Golfers have to learn to stay in the moment and not live in the past, which is applicable to both golfing and real life.
“You just have to focus on what you are doing on your own rather than worrying about everyone else,” said Sienna Mayo, senior.
