On Saturday, March 2nd, the OHS girl’s basketball team rolled into the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and took the state championship in a 56-46 point victory against the Perry Pumas.
The team had mixed emotions heading in, with some saying that the win was already on the cards, but some taking a more reserved approach.
“I was really confident in our team’s ability and I knew we were going to win,” Audrey Bhesania said.
Not everyone carried the same confidence heading into the event.
“I felt pretty nervous, honestly,” Alana Gewargis said.
The game started off dead-even, with a tying score of 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, but the players’ confidence in themselves and each other was unwavering.
“I trusted my coach and my whole team to get the job done,” Bhesania said.
Through the middle two quarters, the Eagles started to pull away, and although Perry began to catch up in the closing minutes, the Eagles held them off and took the win.
“I was really scared- I knew we could do it though,” Gewargis said.
