Girls Golf has long been an award winning sport at OHS. With many new faces this year, the season is looking hopeful. Despite a rocky start, the team’s spirits are unwavering.
“As a team, we are very close, we like to talk a lot outside of golf,” said Maya Bustos, junior.
During this season, the team is focusing on improving their skills and bringing the teams newer members up to scratch.
“It’s my first year on the team. So far it’s been a great experience,” said Jenny Nguyen, sophomore.
The OHS Girls Golf team dynamics have changed greatly with the addition of many new members this year.
“It’s definitely different, this year there are a lot of new people, and we are still getting to know each other,” Nguyen said.
The team is working hard toward competing for a spot in the state tournament, adopting a strict schedule of rigorous practices.
“They’re playing during the week with the team and on the weekends, [we are] trying to make practice as competitive as possible,” said Jeff Williams, girls golf coach.
This season, the team is placing an emphasis on honing in on their skills and improving their game.
“This year we are focusing on being more developmental and improving individually and as a team,” Bustos said. “We are trying to close the gap right now to make golf more accessible and fun”.
Many players on the team put in extra practice on their own, showing that the team’s performance is not out of lack of effort.
“I practice every day from Monday to Thursday, and I play 18 holes over the weekend,” Bustos said.
Despite all the challenges the team is facing, they are not setting their sights any lower than previous year’s.
“I believe we have a good shot at state; it’s a pretty high goal but it’s definitely possible for this team, as long as they play their best. I have full faith in them,” Williams said.
While the season begins,, the team is practicing a lot and focusing on getting better, rather than the scores, hoping to get the skills necessary to excel during the later season and state.
“Right now we’re focusing on using this month to really get in some good practice for further on in the season, and state [finals],” Williams said.
It is obvious that the team wants to be better. With the amount of effort and practice they are putting in, there is an optimistic lookout for this season.
“I really do think they will [come back] this season; As they get better individually, and as a team, I believe they will go far,” Williams said
