The track and field team kicked off its season last Wednesday in its first meet. Led by head coach, Fernando Arce, the team faced off at home against Valley Vista and Barry Goldwater.
“Coach Arce really tries to push us to be the best that we can be,” said Will Wagner, a junior long and triple-jumper. “He thinks everyone has potential and he tries to bring it out of every athlete.”
Last Saturday, the Varsity team competed again in the Rattler Booster invitational at North Canyon High School against over 20 schools.
The returning Varsity athletes are excited to better their times and distances from last year, and to hopefully compete at the State championships.
“I expect to improve from last year,” said Becca Long, a thrower. “Last year was my first year throwing, and I originally started track because my friend thought I would like it. When I tried it I ended up really loving the team.”
Along with wanting to better themselves, athletes that are new to OHS track are enthusiastic to earn their spot on the team.
“The coaches are really nice, and the team is really friendly,” said Rebekah Green, freshman sprinter. “My goals this season are to get personal bests in all my races and qualify for State.”
Whether the athletes have personal goals or simply the goal to get to the State invitational, the spring team has been training since the beginning of February, and the “Winter Track” club has been practicing since November.
This week on Wednesday the whole team will compete against Barry Goldwater and Deer Valley at Deer Valley High School. This Friday the Varsity team will attend the Brophy Invitational.
