Juniors Evan Shawcross, Taylor Drake, and freshman Casey Coleman led the OHS Freedom Fire Blue Squad to first place in the Sporting Clays Commissioners Cup State Championship over spring break. The team broke 29 more clay pigeons than the second place team. The boys are now training for the trap championships and skeet championship which will both take place in late April in Tucson. Senior Trent Jordan was among the other top competitors. Jordan is being scouted by the University of Arizona and a Junior Olympic based team in Colorado called Team U.S.A.
According to coach Jason Jones the program is going to officially expand next season into archery. The team will gain a sponsor for their archery program called the Arizona Archery Club. Jones says that within the area of archery, females dominate the competition in quantity and skill. Expanding into archery is beneficial in other aspects than attracting more females.
“Some people do not like the sound of a gun and this gives them an opportunity [to join our program],” said Jones.
With this expansion the program will need to recruit more coaches to maintain a five student to one coach ratio. At this point those who have agreed to coach the archery team include Kent Younger, Chris and Debbie Harmenson, and Jones suspects for the Arizona Archery Club to send at least, if not more than, one coach. More coaches will be needed and any interested faculty members are invited to contact Jones for further information.
