With a solid core of closely knitted teammates one would expect success and that is exactly what the boys OHS golf team is striving for this season. Among the players is senior Dylan Rumsey, this is his first year golfing and he hopes to take it far.
Rumsey has been enjoying his experience with OHS golf and wishes to pursue it after high school hoping to get a scholarship to Arizona Christian University.
Rumsey’s best match was in Lake Havasu where he shot a 37.
As a team they have won two out of five matches necessary to advance on to state this season. A qualifying score consists of the team shooting under a 154 as a whole.
But the team is not all fresh faces like Rumsey. Fred Moreno is a senior and this is his third season with OHS, fifth year golfing overall. In his first six matches, Moreno shot well enough in five of them to qualify for state. Moreno also wishes to continue his hobby in the future.
“That’s the plan,” Moreno said when asked about pursuing golf past high school.
He sees things taking a positive turn for golf as well.
“People are opening up to golfers and starting to like it more,” Moreno said.
Moreno wants more people to respect golf and its players, as it is not an easy sport. The constant pressure of hitting good shots and keeping up with the top competitors are only a few things Moreno puts up with.
“Most of the time when you’re doing well, you can end up kicking your own [butt],” he said.
Keeping a strong mindset is important to Moreno especially since he is in the number one spot for OHS.
