Residents of Arizona are no strangers to reckless drivers, in fact, the majority of residents are reckless drivers themselves. A large part of the problem is careless high school students driving with little concern for other drivers. This creates lots of danger on the roads, especially in a place where there are lots of high school students, such as the OHS parking lot.
It does not matter if it is the morning or afternoon, the OHS parking lot is a dangerous place. Students fly through the parking lot at unsafe speeds, putting everyone at risk.
¨The students here have the worst driving abilities in the world; I feel scared walking through the parking lot… I’m scared I’m going to walk and just get hit by a car,¨ said Rylan Parsley, senior.
The root of the problem is reckless driving and speeding both in and out of the parking lot, with the majority of students agreeing.
¨I feel that ultimately, many [students] just don’t know how to drive normally, and I think that’s the problem we face.. As well as lots of speeding and reckless driving,¨ said Alex Feranda, senior.
Not only do students feel at risk in the parking lot, but actual crashes and collisions within the bounds of OHS or in surrounding areas are not out of the ordinary on a daily basis.
¨I think the parking lot is unsafe, especially in the morning. My friend got hit this morning, and the girl in the other car just drove away,¨ said Luke Hu, senior.
The result of bad driving tends to be accidents, which have been seen many times in the OHS parking lot, giving OHS students a bad reputation.
¨I would say on the most part they are not good drivers because they get into a lot of accidents,¨ said Noah Graff, senior.
Many OHS students believe that the parking lot is not a place to speed around in, and students should navigate with more caution.
¨I think students should slow down because that gives them more time to react and not hit people or other cars,¨ Hu said.
The parking lot should be a safe place for students to walk through, but with all the speeding, that is not the case.
¨Some students are just crazy drivers and straight up reckless. I don’t usually feel very safe walking through the parking lot with cars speeding past,¨ said Daylin Greene, sophomore.
Overall, if students slowed down and took the drive to and from school seriously, the amount of danger in the parking lot would decrease greatly.
¨Both speeding and recklessness is the problem; everyone cuts each other off. If everyone just slowed down, leaving school would become ten times faster,¨ said Chase Bigler, junior
