As the school year starts up, students at OHS look forward to the upcoming Student Government STUGO run events such as assemblies, football games, and even homecoming. In previous years at OHS, homecoming was placed in late October and had many detail oriented events leading up to it, but this year these homecoming events fall much earlier in the month due to a newly added week long fall break. This means quicker deadlines for people all around campus to meet.
“We are definitely in a little more of a time crunch, with [homecoming] being at the start of the month. We have to get [homecoming planning] done more efficiently and quickly,” said Kane Garcia, junior STUGO representative.
Homecoming week means a lot of school events built for not just the students, but the whole OHS community. One of the most popular events is the homecoming football game. With the season’s “big” game approaching quickly, the team has less time than usual to prepare for Shadow Ridge.
“Our team will have plenty of time to prepare for Shadow Ridge… although I think it’s better to have it later in the month so everyone gets to know each other a bit little more… and everyone gets to come together,” said Tucker Smith, junior.
With OHS students’ favorite events coming up in the future, their anticipation may be taking the focus away from the classrooms too early in the year.
¨[Homecoming] makes me more excited.. But I think fall break, with it being right around the corner of homecoming it’s going to be harder to focus in class,¨ said Quvohn Lewis, sophomore.
All these STUGO ran events are mostly run by the STUGO students with faculty overview and executive decisions, but with less time than usual it may be hard to find venues and get approvals.
¨We booked the venue at the end of last year…It will be more rushed for the STUGO students… but I think they are prepared for it,¨ said Carrie Anderson, STUGO advisor.
These schedule changes that are caused by the new fall break that gives students the opportunity to recover from a tiring and eventful homecoming week. It will allow students to recover physically and mentally from an eventful week before returning back to the classrooms.
¨Homecoming and fall break is just a time to relax,¨ said Lewis, sophomore.
The break not only gives students a time to rest but it also allows them to have better focus in the classroom. Coming back from this new break will allow better focus and work ethic during class.
¨When students have breaks they tend to be more relaxed, focused in class when they return,¨said Emerson Lihn junior.
