Students were surprised to hear about the flooding at OHS Monday.
Jody Evan’s class was in Lab 155 when a student ran out to tell Susan Hubbs, the librarian, that water was dripping from the ceiling.
Hubbs said that she immediately called the custodial staff. After she made the call, the student ran back out saying that water was flooding from the ceiling.
“We had the students leave right away,” Hubbs said.
Hubbs said she shut down all of the computers. When the custodian arrived, he helped her start to move things out of the way. As they were moving the appliances around the room, tiles came down from the ceiling.
After hearing the story around school, students speculated about the cause of the flood.
“Water pipes were frozen. When water came in [the pipes] the ice blocked it, and the water had no place to go,” said Mike Cornish, Athletic Director who is in charge of facilities.
Lab 155 was not the only area of school that fell victim to the bursting of the pipes.
“There was damage in five different areas of the school,” Hubbs said.
The library, career center, cafeteria, sweep room, and main office all experienced flooding, with the sweep room experiencing the worst.
There was some technology damaged in the flood.
“We have 10 computers that need to be replaced,” Hubbs said.
Hubbs said that the labs and sweep room are closed right now, but if you are tardy you still receive a tardy slip and just get sent to class.
There are fans located around the school. Cornish said that they are trying to dry out the carpet, and have to check to make sure that there is no mold.
“The main thing they need to do is make sure it is safe,” Hubbs said.
