The opinions and views of a student are usually left out of the environment of a traditional classroom or school, but the whole point of the speech and debate team at OHS is for students to express their arguments, argue with others and communicate their opinions to the public.
“I saw a need for it to be back on campus,” said Patricia DeVito, language arts teacher.
For the past few years there hasn’t been a speech and debate club because no teacher would agree to be in charge of it.
The moderator positions have been filled by DeVito and language arts teacher, Kyle Russell.
DeVito hopes that a variety of students will want to join.
Anyone who has an interest in politics, inside and outside of school, controversial news, things that might affect them when they get to college and more, are encouraged to join, DeVito said.
DeVito plans on the team meetings being student-run, with her and Russell as guides.
Susan Chen, sophomore, has joined the team hoping to not only be a part of the team, but also a leader.
“I was interested because I have always wanted to join a speech and debate team but they did not offer it last year at O’Connor,” Chen said.
The team is still in its infant stages and the schedule isn’t entirely decided yet, but the OHS team will compete with other schools.
