Eighth graders and their parents will have the opportunity to walk through the cafeteria and talk to representatives from each of the clubs, committees, and programs at OHS.
“I think [Future Freshman Night] is important, because it is the incoming freshmen’s first look at our campus and all of the clubs and organizations that we offer,” said Kelsey Chancellor, historian for the Freshman Mentors club.
Chancellor said the mentors will be there to answer any questions that students and their parents might have about OHS.
Justin McClain, math teacher and coordinator of Future Freshman Night, said in an email that the event is also taking the place of Meet the Coaches Night. Incoming freshman who are interested in playing sports can learn more about the sport they are interested in participating in.
Future Freshman Night also gives incoming freshman the opportunity to see all of the different high school electives they can choose from.
“It’s showing students what a high school art classroom looks like,” said Jason Lohmeier, Art Teacher.
Lohmeier said that students in middle school do not always get to choose their electives. One semester they might have art and another semester they may have music.
According to Lohmeier, most students do not realize that you can take an art class every day in high school.
“Also in elementary school they do not have “just ceramics” class. They do not realize that in high school they can just play piano, or just paint, or just sing,” Lohmeier said.
Future Freshman Night will be the first step in many students’ high school careers at OHS.
