After the immense success following the release of Moana in 2016, it is safe to say that fans were overjoyed when the implementation of a sequel was announced. Moana 2 brings back all the best elements of the first movie, with a catchy soundtrack, carefully crafted comedic timing, and an engaging plot line that keeps viewers entertained.
With returning stars Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, Moana 2 has the same characters that audiences fell in love with in the first film.
In the sequel, Moana must find the lost island of Motufetu and break the curse which separates all of the islands, in order to save her home, Motunui, and connect her people with the rest of the islands across the sea to preserve their culture and build relationships with the people.
On this mission, Moana reunites with Maui, bringing back their playful banter and admirable teamwork. Additionally, Moana must construct a wayfinding crew, consisting of people from her island. This crew will sail with her and help her along her mission.
New characters such as Loto, voiced by Rose Matafeo, Moni, voiced by Hualalai Chung, and Kele, voiced by David Fane all make up Moana’s wayfinding crew, along with Hei Hei and Pua of course.
These new characters bring a new dynamic to the film, providing Moana with a collaborative team that all have special talents.
Loto is an architect who built their ship and is always making inventions to improve their time at sea. Moni is well versed in ancient cultural stories and is the historian of Motunui and Kele is a farmer who keeps the crew fed and healthy.
The movie creates an element of suspense throughout as the preservation of her island and culture depends on the success of her mission to Motufetu. The audience is left fully immersed in the twists and turns or every setback that takes place, wondering if Moana, Maui, and their crew will save the day.
Ending on a cliffhanger, the conclusion of Moana 2 definitely alludes to a third implementation to the series. With the undeniable triumph of the first two films, it would make sense for directors to continue the series.
Overall, Moana 2 is a thoroughly enjoyable, family-friendly movie that people of all ages can enjoy. Just like the ocean calls Moana, this film is calling people from across the world for a fun watching experience.
