Deadpool & Wolverine, released July 26th, 2024, is the newest Marvel film and 3rd edition to the Deadpool franchise. This comedic and action-packed film is filled with hilarious references, jokes, and is constantly breaking the 4th wall in traditional Deadpool fashion.
The film involves a crossover with the TVA (Time Variance Authority) from the Loki series. Deadpool gets engaged with the TVA and teams up with a Wolverine variant to save the Sacred Timeline. Along the way, he encounters various familiar and new characters, including some surprises such as Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Garner, Channing Tatum, and many more.
Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, made $205 million on its opening weekend and has beaten records of the previous Deadpool and X-Men movies. It is currently the third highest-grossing film of the year and climbing into the worldwide top ten. The film is also now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
Despite its high score on Rotten Tomatoes and audience and critic reviews, some had complaints about the quality of the movie. Many viewers complained about the cinematography and special effects, as well as the dull and less appealing lighting. People also found there to be an excessive amount of quippy jokes, even for Deadpool, with forced dialogue and a loss of plot.
While some of these complaints are true, in that it was not the best quality, viewers may forget that this is clearly a new era of Marvel films. It is obvious that this arguably was not Marvel’s most excellent film, but it is clear that this is just another step to show how they are beginning to merge all of the essential characters together for the future.
People who have seen all of the Marvel movies, especially the more recent ones, are starting to understand that Marvel is creating a theme, potentially planning something big and vital that requires all of the characters to be within the same universe. For example, films like Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Loki all reference the multiverse and conversion of realities in some unique way. Deadpool & Wolverine is meant to extend this theory of the Multiverse.
While there certainly are mixed feelings about Deadpool & Wolverine, there is no denying the hilarious jokes and passionate acting provided by everybody’s favorite actors in cinema. Not only does it make the audience laugh, but it also makes the audience look forward to the future of the MCU and what Marvel has in store. All in all, it is definitely worth the watch.
