On July 28, 2023, famous rapper Travis Scott released his most recent album, Utopia. Travis Scott fans have long awaited for this 19 song album for years. Each song feels majestic in its own way, capturing the essence of space and time. Many people liked this album, comparing it to his previous album Astroworld, which came out in 2018. The previous release gained such popularity through its features and overall tone. Fans had high expectations for Utopia, hoping to see the same energy and creativity as the 2018 album. While certain songs lived up to the hype, others clearly fell flat.
Some tracks are easy for listeners to enjoy, but other songs on the album could have been improved. One of the most notable songs is “Meltdown”; the transition at two minutes and thirty seconds is definitely notable, and the lyrics only add more to the astonishing base. Another song that stands out is “ K-Pop”, featuring Bad Bunny and the Weekend. This song is like nothing ever produced before, it can make anyone want to sway and dance to the beat.
One of the things that is so impressive about this album is the number of the other varying artists that are featured: a total of 19 different collaborations as a whole. The features in this album are heavenly steps up from both previous albums of his and the other releases on the market right now. Travis Scott’s lyricism and musicality are what makes Utopia so brilliant. The only song that subjectively falls flat is “Hyena”; it is overall a poorly executed song, lacking a consistent beat that flows together, unlike things we have seen before of his. There is a lot of lost potential in this album that could have been found in the possible expansion and improvement of the features.
In comparison to one of Travis Scott’s last albums, JackBoys, Utopia is undoubtedly better. Utopia has a greater number of fantastic songs, and enough features to make it an incomparable album. Utopia does a fantastic job integrating other artists’ talents, and in the essence of the music itself- the beats, flow, and tempo are unbelievable. There is undoubtedly room for improvement, as with the artist’s previous releases, but it is still an extraordinary album that is worth the listen.
