Hughes’ high school hits leave viewers with the 80’s dream

Work, early mornings, late nights and even more work comes to mind when you think of high school.

Hollywood has a completely different perspective,  full of adventure, humor, and of course, finding love.

John Hughes has made many high school movies that are a must-see.

These are a few that will leave you daydreaming of a perfect 80’s high school life:

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was made in 1986 and is still very popular. The film is about a boy named Ferris who decides to take a sick day to explore Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane Peterson, his best friend Cameron Frye and a red Ferrari. He does it not only to have a good day but to teach Cameron to finally have some self-respect.

The movie is clever, hilarious and sweet all at the same time. It even includes life advice like “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.”

Ferris Bueller is a great movie for all ages. This film is loved by everyone and one that I believe will be loved for many more years to come. If you have not seen it yet or are looking for something to brighten your day, I suggest to drop everything and enjoy your day off.

The second movie I recommend to you is another classic by John Hughes, Sixteen Candles. The film stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall who you will also find in many of John Hughes other works.

Sixteen Candles is about sophomore Samantha Baker who experiences every girl’s dream and nightmare at the same time. It is her sixteenth birthday and everyone in her family has forgotten because of her sister’s upcoming wedding. However, her wish does come true when she catches the eye of high school sweetheart, Jake Ryan.

This movie contains funny old relatives, a foreign exchange student named Long Duk Dong, nerdy freshmen, an awesome soundtrack and many different high school relationships. It might  seem like a typical chick-flick, but it is much more than that. It is funny and a movie that you can connect to.

Throughout the movie you cannot help but feel bad for Samantha and also envy her at the same time. It is full of characters that grow on you and it is impossible not to love.

Next is the one and only, The Breakfast Club. If you have not heard of this movie or have not seen it, you must sit down as soon as you can and watch it. The film is about a group of high school kids who are sent to detention on a Saturday morning.

While it does seem like a horrible scenario, they take detention to a whole new level. The students that are stuck together in detention are a great mix of each of the social groups in high school.

Claire, the popular girl,  is always worried about what all her friends might think. Another character, Andrew, is a jock and terrified of his father. Brian is the nerdy student, who would rather die than fail a class. The basket case, Allison, who everyone ignores. Then the one guy who likes to make himself feel better about his life by acting up in school, John. These teenagers all have completely different lives but they all have one thing in common and that is parents who do not understand them.

The Breakfast Club is one of Hughes’ best films. There is something in it for everyone to enjoy. There is a lot of humor in it but also moments of life lessons and connecting with different people. This is the type of movie that never seems to get old and there is never a bad time to watch it.

Before I say anything about the movie Pretty in Pink, I would like to point out the killer fashion sense in it. Each character has a unique style and personality that you cannot help but want in your life.

Pretty in Pink is another Molly Ringwald movie that is about a girl in high school that has caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. The only problem that is keeping them apart in this movie is their social status.

Andie Walsh, (Ringwald) is a very bright girl who happens to live in the not so great part of town and has a bum of a dad. She also works at a record store and is followed around by Duckie Dale (played by Jon Cryer) who also happens to be in love with her. Out of all the characters, Duckie stuck out most. He is charming, humorous, sarcastic, and let’s not forget stylish.

Blane McDonough (portrayed by Andrew McCarthy) is a rich, preppy teen who has found an interest in Andie. At first he seems fine with the different social and financial classes but as the movie goes on he starts to doubt himself.

Even though Blane does make some stupid comments, he turns out to be a total sweetheart with great looks. He is not like the rest of the rich kids at their school.

This is another movie that everyone will love but might attract more of the female audience. As you watch it you will get slightly annoyed by the so called “rich and popular kids” but the main characters are so down to earth and original. The movie leaves you happy and wanting to live in the 80’s working at the local record shop with the perfect boyfriend.

The last movie I recommend to you is Some Kind of Wonderful. It is directed by Howard Deutch but written by John Hughes. This romance is different from the others because it is about a guy who is trying to get the attention of the most popular girl in school. It is not the usual girl point of view, you also see the guy’s perspective.

Keith Nelson (Eric Stoltz) has fallen in love with the beautiful Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson). When Keith asks Amanda out, his tomboyish best friend Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) realizes that she is actually in love with Keith.

However, they all do not know that Amanda first said yes to make her old boyfriend jealous. This film will make any girl’s heart melt. Keith Nelson is extremely attractive, sweet, and intelligent guy. If you are a sucker for romance, I definitely think you should check this film out.

Each of John Hughes films have a very similar feel to it. If you like one there is a chance you will love the others.
