I was inspired to check out DeFalco’s Italian Eatery, Grocery, and Deli after seeing it on the show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
It was a perfect afternoon to drive out to Scottsdale and check out this now famous Italian restaurant at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Oak Street.
I had no idea that I would soon be caught up in the glory that is DeFalco’s. After two bites of a massive calzone, I was already in a trance.
Y’know that moment when you come across food that is so delectable, you don’t talk, you merely smile and nod?
Although “bliss” or “heaven in a calzone” would be proper titles for such a tasty dish, the calzone that I ordered is named “The Centurion.”
The Centurion is what the chef made for Guy Fieri, the host of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.
I ordered the 10-inch sized portion, which stretches across the plate, but DeFalco’s also offers a 16-inch sized portion.
I could only finish half of the calzone, as it was so massive.
The Centurion is filled to the brim with gooey, fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, spicy roasted peppers and basil (I ordered the dish with no olives, but The Centurion also comes with Kalamata Olives.)
The heart of the calzone is the sopressata. The sopressata is a fancy word for salami. The thinly-sliced sopressata tasted kind of like a spiced-up pepperoni. It was delicious.
The calzone is served with marinara sauce.
I don’t think that a more perfect union could have been formed between the spices, juices, cheese, baked crust and marinara sauce.
My mouth waters just thinking about it.
The best part was, I got all of that food for only 8 bucks.
The madness doesn’t end with the food served in the restaurant. DeFalco’s is also a deli that sells all kinds of meat (sausage, pepperoni, etc.) and an Italian grocery.
That’s right folks, DeFalco’s sells pasta shells, pizza sauce, some more traditional Italian foods, and even homemade pizza dough.
The combination of a restaurant, deli, and grocery, make for a quaint and happy atmosphere. All of the staff members were kind and lively.
I bought some of the homemade pizza dough, a can of spicy Italian pizza sauce, and made a pizza for dinner that night.
The grocery items were reasonably priced as well.
Thanks to DeFalco’s I experienced heaven in calzone-form and heaven in pizza-form all in the same day.
