The most painful thing known to man is watching the TV series that you’ve come to know and love, die before your eyes.
Futurama is an animated TV show that has been on for 13 years with seven amazing seasons full of laughter and fun. However, catastrophe hit when the program announced that Futurama’s final episode ever was going to air Sept. 4.
Futurama is a story that follows Philip J. Fry (voiced by Billy West), or commonly known as Fry, a delivery boy in 1999. On New Year’s Eve he was unwittingly cryogenically frozen for a thousand years.
He wakes up in the year 3000 and that’s where the story begins as he tries to make sense of this new futuristic world full of aliens and new technology. He lives with his nephew the Professor (also voiced by Billy West) and works for his delivery business.
If you’re looking for a new Netflix series to follow, Futurama should definitely be at the top of your list.
Futurama does have a rap sheet for being cancelled many times, only to return a few months later. Many die-hard fans say that this isn’t the end and the show will return again, but I think they are just telling themselves that to ease the pain.
I fear that this really is the end for this inspiring show.
The final episode is titled “Meanwhile”. The funny quote that appears before the show, as it does before every episode, was “Avenge Us” obviously trying to get a message across to their fans.
This episode wasn’t much different than any other. It began with the Professor giving his “good news” to everyone and of course showing a new invention that he created.
Fry uses this new invention to his advantage to finally propose to his crush since episode one, Leela, the mutant Cyclops (voiced by Katey Sagal).
The plot of this episode flows very nicely and was probably one of the best out of all their seasons. It tied everything together nicely in a way that didn’t make you too depressed that Futurama was over forever.
The ending was very satisfying. It was almost a cliffhanger but it was still able to tie up any loose ends.
Futurama didn’t end with a bang. There is no unbelievable exciting action packed ending. This ending is paced. Not slow, but paced. It tugs at your heart and is very sweet and satisfying. I wouldn’t change anything about it. It was perfect in its simplicity.
I don’t know if Futurama will return like it has in the past or if this truly is the end. One can only hope. Either way the final episode couldn’t have been better.
I almost hope that Futurama doesn’t continue just so they can end with this episode on such a strong note.
Futurama will forever stay in our hearts. Television will never be the same again without it. It’s gone but never forgotten. R.I.P
