If you are into entertaining scary movies I recommend that you go and see Evil Dead.
Most scary movies are shunned because they are either too cheesy or just plain stupid. Evil Dead was actually entertaining and the storyline was well thought out.
Some parts of the movie made me cringe while other parts made me laugh.
I usually like scary movies that create an eerie mood and leave a lasting impression. Evil Dead was not scary in that way. It was not a jump-out-of-your-seat kind of movie but rather an entertaining flick with lots of blood and guts.
The story starts with four friends who meet up at a cabin to help out their friend, Mia (Jane Levy). Mia is trying to quit her drug addiction and her brother comes to support her and mend their broken relationship.
I thought that Jane Levy did a great job portraying Mia. This movie was definitely different than that of her usual role on the ABC family comedy, Suburgatory. Levy was convincing as a troubled, young drug addict.
I also liked the character of Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci). Although his curiosity ended up killing the cat later in the movie, you have to give him a break, because all characters have to do slightly stupid things in scary movies. Eric did redeem himself by saving a member of the group later in the film.
The story starts to get interesting when the friends end up finding some sketchy witchcraft type stuff, dead cats, and a creepy book in the basement.
Eric decides it would be a smart idea if he opened the book and read some of the demonic prayers out loud. After he does this Mia starts acting strange. Her friends think that she is just having withdrawals and acting out.
As the story unfolds, lots of gruesome things start happening. The makeup and special effects are impressive.
Some of the scenes were hard to watch as characters had limbs cut off, got burned, shot at and stabbed. Those scenes could have been unsettling for some viewers, but in my opinion they made the movie shocking and unexpected. After all, people do go to scary movies knowing that they will be put out of their comfort zones.
The possession of Mia was honestly not all that scary. As in other movies like the Exorcist, the demon had a deep voice and crude tongue.
I liked the fact that the ending was unexpected. It was definitely not a predictable movie. There was some creativeness in the story, which is not usually present in scary movies.
There was also some warm-heartedness at the end, which was nice, but they did not overdo it. The movie quickly got scary again.
Although I am more into thrillers, Evil Dead was pretty great. I was entertained throughout the entire film.
